1st of all lets get one thing straight, no matter what software you choose it will not make your machine 100% secure. If a criminal gang writes a virus today and set it out spreading, it could be 2-3 days before the virus companies produce an update that detects it and if you are unlucky enough to hit it in the meantime then your machine will become infected.
The first thing to do is too install antivirus software and keep it upto date so that you are protected as well as you can be. The most well known versions of antivirus software are those made by Norton and McCaffee however this doesn't mean they are the best. In fact in my oppinion there is software available FOC that offer the same level of protection but don't take up half of the system resources of the big 2. I use and always recommend AVG Antivirus who offer a paid for and free version of their software. The free version is for home users exclusively whilst business users must pay for the Antivirus Protection.
Malware is simply software that is installed on your computer that either you don't want but installed by mistake or software installed seruptitously such as key loggers. Spybot search and destroy ran frequently and updated will keep your machine pretty much free of these.
We have seen a massive rise in this type of infection, you get a virus which installs all manner of popups relating to Antivirus software which shows up scanning your machine and telling you that you have a virus but you need to PAY for the antivirus software to remove them. The software IS the actuall virus, what the criminals behind it are hoping is that all the popups and messages that it give you will scare you into paying them for their fake software.
